Aluminum enclosures are protective housings made from aluminum alloys, offering excellent durability, corrosion resistance, and lightweight construction. They shield sensitive electronics in industrial, outdoor, and portable applications. Standard ratings include IP67 and NEMA 4X, ensuring protection against dust, water, and corrosion.
An aluminum enclosure is a rigid housing manufactured from extruded, cast, or machined aluminum, designed to protect electronic components, controls, and sensitive equipment from environmental hazards. These enclosures combine the natural corrosion resistance of aluminum with structural strength, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and thermal conductivity. Unlike plastic enclosures, aluminum offers superior heat dissipation—critical for power electronics. Unlike steel, aluminum is 66% lighter (density 2.70 g/cm³ vs. 7.85 g/cm³). Common configurations include die-cast boxes for rugged applications, extruded housings for instrumentation, and custom CNC-machined enclosures for specialized electronics. Surface treatments such as anodizing and powder coating enhance durability and aesthetics.

Scenario: Industrial PLC control enclosure upgrade for a wastewater treatment facility.
A municipal wastewater treatment facility experienced repeated failures of plastic control enclosures housing PLCs and power supplies. The existing ABS enclosures degraded after 12 months due to continuous UV exposure, chemical vapors (chlorine and hydrogen sulfide), and physical impacts from maintenance activities. Failures allowed moisture ingress (failed IP65 seal), causing corrosion on circuit boards and unplanned downtime averaging 8 hours monthly.
The MRO team replaced 24 failed plastic enclosures with custom aluminum enclosures featuring enhanced environmental protection.
